In order to reduce the intense heating of the first ring groove by
the gas, the piston of the diesel engine is usually equipped with a
spiral shallow groove around the fire bank to reduce the gas
channeling along the gap between the piston and the cylinder liner
by using the labyrinth step-down principle.
